When I first saw the trailer for FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK I thought that WAS the gag, so I was surprised to see it was actually a feature film. At first I had little interest but my curiosity began to grow as I chuckled through the ridiculous trailers.

Obviously this movie is a parody of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, which stars Marlon Wayans as Christian and Kali Hawk as Hannah. Hearing that Wayans was inspired by greats like AIRPLANE!, I was hoping for a fun, but ridiculous time at the theater. With fairly low expectations I was looking forward to a mindless, enjoyable evening. Unfortunately it didn't even live up to my lowered expectations.

Kali Hawk did a decent job as Hannah, but it's tough to gauge her acting with such ridiculous and inconsistent writing. The same goes for Wayans, but it's obvious he was one of the writers. He is certainly far funnier than Hawk, and in some moments I was rooting for him to deliver more as it seemed he is capable.

Hannah's roommate is far more off the wall, but her comedic appeal is dwarfed by the unappealing vulgarity! I am certainly no prude but it’s just too much! There were a few celebrities that popped up here and there with Florence Henderson's part the most shocking!

The movie tries to make jokes about the abusive context from FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, and goes completely over the top for some scenes, which seemed to be the main focus, with the rest of the film just filler to get from 'A' to 'B'. The odd flow of the film, as well as cuts of certain scenes are oddly timed. Another problem I have is the inconsistency of the characters, mostly Hannah. "I love you!"; "I hate you; you should leave!"; "I've always loved you!" made little sense to me. One might argue that this is a poke at the character in FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, but I highly doubt it. This just felt like bad writing.

The movie poked a lot at racial stereotypes, which is something you'd expect given the. Again, things just felt oddly timed and inconsistent. I did expect far more graphic nudity, and there was the odd bit here and there, but anything that wasn't "T&A" was a ridiculous prosthetic.

I haven't see FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, so some of the gags (pun intended) may have been missed on me, but a film like this should try to hold up on it's own. But it's clumsy story, characters and humor don’t work at all. I will admit there was ONE joke that made me laugh...and it should have been included in the trailer to save everyone 90 minutes of "pain"...pun also intended.

I give it a 2 out of 10.
